The ECU provides energy and water management services for the Council's non-housing properties, unless stated otherwise. These include the contribution of technical expertise in respect of monitoring energy and water usage; purchasing energy and water supplies and validating on-going invoiciMonday, April 16, 2007ter usage and advising on necessary remedial actions, training of the Council's managerial staff.

In addition the ECU carries out energy audits of Council's domestic dwelling to SAP Level 65 using the Auto evaluator methods of assessments.

Domestic Buildings

The ECU prepares and estimates the energy ratings of homes in the borough and reports to the Government on the progress made in reducing domestic energy use.

The unit also advises the Housing Department on improvement works to heating and insulation in council housing in order to reduce CO2 emissions.

The unit's services are available to Housing Associations and Housing Trusts in the Newham area.

Public Buildings

  • Purchasing - The Energy Conservation Unit purchases energy supplies on behalf of Newham's buildings as well as the Theatre Royal, Stratford Circus, The Academy of Music and the Sixth-Form Colleges, in line with Best Value. Green Electricity is always considered when purchasing fuel.
  • Monitoring - Energy and water consumption is monitored in order to minimise usage.
  • Energy Efficiency Surveys - Surveys are carried out and advice given on implementing the energy saving measures identified
  • Advice - Advice is provided to senior council officers on the impact of Energy Efficiency Legislation, as required under Local Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development.
  • Project Financing - The unit identifies Monday, April 16, 2007 provided by Central Government and Commercial Organisations, to assist the implementation of measures.
  • Climate Change Levy - We are responsible for the installation of energy improvement measures in 25 public buildings in the last 12 months, to meet Newham's environmental objectives in accordance with Central Government policies.
  • Renewables - We have applied for grant funding to install a large-scale solar voltaic project in the Woodgrange Rgeneration Area. All major electricity users in the borough are currently using green electricity form a renewable source.
