Abbey Mills Pumping Station
Stratford, East London Client:
Thames Water Utilities
Contract value: £2m
The
building forms the enclosure to a new £25m
sewage pumping station, constructed on a
site at Abbey Mills on the Stratford Marshes.
The site lies adjacent to an existing Grade
II listed Victorian pumping station of great
historical interest. A single space 56 metres
long and 29 metres high, it provides complete
access to all the pumping chambers which
lie 20 metres below ground, and houses diesel
generators, electrical switch-gear and a
computer control room. Clad in aluminium
louvers and panelling the building stands
temple-like within its open, semi-industrial
landscape setting.

London's
first major post-war park won in an International
competition by the French and English team
of Groupe Signes and Patel Taylor with Engineers
Arup. The 9 hectare park creates a rich

for different activities. Built over a brownfield
site the park catalyses regeneration in
the area in a contemporary formal composition
